Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been officially released by Manchester United.

The Swede’s name appears on a list published by the Premier League, showing all players who have been released by teams in the top flight.

Ibrahimovic had been signed on a one-year deal with the option of a second but, despite his incredible first season with the Red Devils, the 35-year-old is unlikely to be lining up at Old Trafford playing under Jose Mourinho during the 2017-18 campaign.

The former PSG and Barcelona striker was a pivotal player during the 2016-17 season, scoring 28 goals in all competitions and helping the club win the Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

His season was ended in April by a serious knee injury, leaving his future uncertain. United could still offer him another deal but as things stand he is unlikely to be plying his trade in the Premier League next season.

Ibrahimovic is the only United player to be released this summer, although there remains plenty of speculation surrounding the futures of players like Wayne Rooney, David de Gea and Anthony Martial.

Other high profile free agents include Arsenal’s Yaya Sanogo, who managed one goal in 20 appearances for the Gunners, Joey Barton, who leaves Burnley after receiving an 18-month ban for gambling related charges, and John Terry, who leaves Stamford Bridge after 19 years with the Blues.
